Q
WHO IS A GOOD PLASTIC SURGERY CANDIDATE?
A

If you have realistic expectations and a good understanding of the limitations of medicine and technology; if you know that the surgery results might differ based on the body characteristics of each patient; if you have a strong self-image and a good reason for pursuing a plastic surgery procedure; if you want to improve a physical trait not people’s perception of you; and if you realize that plastic surgery is not a means to gain popularity or a way to overcome life traumas or crises that had a negative psychological impact; then you are eligible.

Q
IS THERE AN APPROPRIATE AGE FOR PLASTIC SURGERY?
A
Given that no universal rule exists as to the appropriate age for plastic surgery, procedures are evaluated on a case by case basis. Each individual undergoes thorough medical assessment in order to determine the unique body type and aging process.

However, there are age preferences for certain procedures. On the one hand, for patients under the age of 30 for example, mini-lifts or laser procedures are generally recommended instead of facelifts, but this is not a rule. Otoplasty, on the other hand, is appropriate for both adults and children as young as 5 years old.

Q
IS PLASTIC SURGERY COVERED BY INSURANCE?
A

While insurance may partially or fully cover reconstructive surgery, it does not cover cosmetic surgery.

Q
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COSMETIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY?
A

Cosmetic plastic surgery is performed upon the patient’s desire to enhance or change a healthy and normally functioning part of the body. Reconstructive surgery is performed in the aim to restore function, achieve physical normality or correct a physical abnormality caused by a birth defect, disease, tumor, physical trauma or infection.

Q
HOW MUCH PAIN IS INVOLVED IN PLASTIC SURGERY?
A

The level of pain and discomfort involved in every surgery varies between one procedure and the other, and thus, different methods of anesthetizing are required. The type of anesthesia administered is determined based on your preferences in terms of personal pain threshold and comfort.

For non-invasive surgeries, topical anesthetic is used, while minor invasive surgeries require local anesthetic sometimes combined with sedation. As for invasive surgeries, they call for general anesthesia.

Q
IS PLASTIC SURGERY AN OUTPATIENT OR INPATIENT PROCEDURE?
A
Most plastic surgery procedures are performed on an outpatient basis except for surgeries that are extensive or when complications arise, where an overnight stay may be required.
